UT study of Enron e-mails draws attention
A UT researcher in computer science who has studied more than half a million e-mails generated by the now-bankrupt Enron Corp. was interviewed for a New York Times story on e-mail surveillance on 22 May 2005.
Michael Berry, professor and interim head of UT's computer science department, uses complex mathematical algorithms to detect and track topics in masses of e-mail without having to read the content of individual messages. Berry and UT research associate Murray Browne studied the Enron e-mail data set made available by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in its investigation of the corporation's energy-trading and accounting practices. Berry and Browne presented their findings to a workshop on counterterrorism and security sponsored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
