NSF scholarship program aids K-12 science, math

Robert Noyce Scholarship Program

The National Science Foundation is soliciting proposals for its 2006 Robert Noyce Scholarship Program, which seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors (juniors and seniors), as well as already-graduated professionals in these fields, to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers.

The program provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and programs for students who commit to teaching in high-need K-12 schools.

The NSF deadline for an optional letter of intent is February 28, 2006, and the NSF deadline for full proposals is April 3, 2006, at 5 p.m. EST.

The University of Tennessee, alone or as a member of a partnership, may submit no more than one proposal, which necessitates an internal competition.

UT Internal deadline: 12:00 noon, Monday, February 8, 2006

Guidelines for Internal Preproposal

1. Fill out and include a completed NSF cover sheet prepared using the NSF FastLane.
2. Write a two-page project summary, clearly stating the following:

a. Goals
b. Participants (UT and others)
c. A brief description of the research to be accomplished

3. Prepare a budget summary (use the NSF FastLane to prepare the budget and submit only the summary budget to the internal competition)

The NSF anticipates funding 13 to 18 awards, including both new (Phase I) and continuing (Phase II) projects, from an anticipated funding amount of $7 million.
