Export Control workshops offered

After the terrorist attack of 2001, the U.S. government is focusing increased attention on the federal Export Control regulations. These laws apply very specifically to university faculty and staff and to the materials they teach and otherwise disseminate. Violations of export control laws carry severe penalties, including huge monetary fines and possible prison time. The establishment of an effective and ongoing education and awareness program is one part of compliance with federal Export Control laws.

Robin Witherspoon, the export control specialist in the Office of Research, is in the process of contacting each college to ask for time at college administrative council meetings and department meetings to present information and guidance for faculty and staff.

Several workshops have already been scheduled in the Colleges of Engineering and Education, Health and Human Sciences. If your department would like to schedule a workshop or if any individual is concerned about export control issues, please contact Robin (865-974-0232, rwithers@ln.utk.edu).
